Governor Scott: 8,500 Intermodal Jobs/$10 Billion Impact

Florida Governor Rick Scott lauded the vision and potential for the Winter Haven Intermodal Terminal and noted that Panama Canal shipping will double after the widened waterway opens in 2014. He added “Florida’s strategic position is a perfect opportunity for the state to become an international shipping hub.” The Evansville Western Terminal will be a key element of the state’s growing international influence. Scott also presented CSX CEO Michael Ward a special medal of recognition for its economic and employment influence within the state.

Groundbreaking mayhem at the ceremonies included (l to r) City Commissioner Nat Birdsong; City Commissioner Jamie Beckett; County Commissioner Melony Bell, City Commissioner Steven Hunnicutt; FDOT Transportation Secretary Ananth Prasad; Mayor J.P. Powell; Governor Rick Scott; County Commissioner Todd Dantzler; City Commissioner Pete Chichetto; County Commissioner Ed Smith; Congressman John Mica; Congressman Daniel Webster and County Commissioner Sam Johnson. Even with all this help the construction of the intermodal terminal will take 15 to 18 months.

The groundbreaking ceremonies attracted more than 200 attendees and featured the musical talents of the Winter Haven High School Band.

The Winter Haven Intermodal Terminal is being constructed by Evansville Western Railway. Several local companies are already under contract to provide products and services for the site development. Whitehead Construction has been hired to build four of the first structures on the site.

The terminal will lead to the construction of a Business and Warehousing Park surrounding the site on 900+ additional acres. The long term economic impact of this project will enhance Winter Haven and Central Florida’s future for generations to come.

You know an event is going to be big when the Governor shows up! Great job, Winter Haven Chamber, on putting together a first-class event for this ground-breaking. Thanks also for all you did to help make this day become a reality for our community.

Since this site is now under construction, is the Pollard Road open from Eloise Loop to the Old Bartow Road then crossing to Highway 60? Just wondering if we can use this road yet to get directly from Eloise Loop to Highway 60 and how much traffic will be in the area.

    Thank you,
    Regina Carlton
