I remember as a kid standing on the sidewalk in front of the Orange Dome watching the parades go by and going inside it to high school Homecoming dances and seeing young women crowned the next Citrus Queen. The Orange Dome was a unique structure in Central Florida and a Winter Haven landmark for decades. Sentimentality talking? Absolutely, but with the end of the Dome goes one more thing that defines Winter Haven. What will tourists remember Winter Haven for now that the Dome (and Cypress Gardens) is gone? Another empty strip mall?

As a former resident of Winter Haven, it seems a real shame that the city could not find a good use for the Orange Dome. It was a landmark by which many visitors identified the city. I know we did before we actually bought a home and took up residence in Winter Haven (which lasted 23 years).

It always seemed to me that no one in authority really cared about saving it.
Oh well, so goes so many of the “good old days”.

Many of my friends who live in the Penn., N.J., Maryland area have been telling me what a wonderful addition WaWa will be to the Winter Haven community. They tell me the food is fresh, healthy, and delicious. I’m excited to welcome WaWa to Polk County.
